Early upgrade to GO

Just received in the mail the GO card and luggage tags from Marco Polo club today. A bit of a surprise, since I only have 41244 club miles so far. I would not expect to be upgraded to GO until after my planned J trip in Aug, which would add another 19732 club miles to my account.

Now my club miles has been set to zero with GO status expires in Jun'12. A really pleasant surprise! Now I can enjoy GO treatment for my upcoming Aug long haul trip.

BTW, can I use the Admiral Clubs in the US while flying domestic AA codeshare flight (on AS metal) by the GO card? Thanks!

Congratulations! - did you do a lot of travel within the past few months, or were you a gold / diamond member before? Early renewals are more common, but an early upgrade is definitely a good feeling ^

Thanks!! That's why this took me by surprise. I was comped SL status in Nov'10. Since then I flew two transpac in J (D or I to be more exact). One in Jan'11, the other in May'11. And I have an Aug'11 transpac reservation for biz class. So I'd expect to become CO in coming Aug anyway. This comes 2 months ahead of time.

Exactly the same thing happened to me last year, in very similar circumstances:

You guys are lucky.

A few months ago, I was a Silver at 39.65 sectors with a confirmed flight on KA in Y one week away. My colleague was going to travel with me on that flight, and I wanted to bring him to the CX Lounge, so I wrote an email to MPC to ask whether they could upgrade me to Gold ahead of time and thus have the Gold lounge benefits.

MPC wrote back and said that they had to follow the rules, and denied me the upgrade.

Worse yet, the same agent wrote back to me two weeks later and said that she had upgraded me to Gold... I got really pissed off at that, since she had done no such favor for me and it was merely through my own flying that I reach the Gold MPC level.

I would say this is simply because you are an Amex Platinum member and Amex is in vogue with CX at present and they want to encourage people to spend for travel on Amex

Does this type of early upgrade a common scenario when upgrading from Green to Silver?

Officially, no, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

agree.

Has to be marketed and operated by oneworld airline to get benefit.

However, AA & AS has reciprocal on some routes, so really doesn't hurt to ask!

Maybe it's a strategy for CX to upgrade people to GO early so they stay loyal and do their best to keep their GO status.

I have had also been upgraded to GO early, and yes it was my first GO experience. I only had 51K miles and I do have more Y trips coming less than a month away, and I was also very pleasantly surprised when I logged-in to MPC online and saw my status is GO!!!

But yeah, it's strange how they do this, because years ago I am a forever 55K Silver, called MPC and was told, "sorry, not a mile less."

What was different that year is that I flew 2 Y round-trips in 2 months and another Y coming up a week later (so 3 Ys in less than 2 months), and I suspect someone at MPC saw that pattern and decided that I'm a worthy investment to give early GO too. Turned out they are right, I direct all my flights to CX now (to maintain DM), and back then I was seriously thinking of switching to AA as CX seems too rigid on their FFP, but now I know they can be flexible....

Does it matter whether you're based in HK or elsewhere? I'm HK-based and was about 700 miles short of upgrading to GO, with travel booked to push me over the threshold. Still had to fly the segment. Maybe they feel more pressure to be nice to people outside CX's home market?

Last year, though, they cut me some slack with renewal -- reset my miles about a month early, after I had enough to renew SL. That let me count a trip I had booked for later in that month toward the next year instead of losing the miles if they had reset me at the normal time.

This forum has talked about strategies to have your miles credited to the next tier rather than losing it. I suggest you check them out, very informational.
