Smile Is it really possible to use mile for upgrade?

I'm booking a ticket from JFK-BKK-JFK for this summer and have 50,000 miles that will be expired in June 2010. So, I am thinking about just buy K class ticket and request for an upgrade to Business class on the way back to Thailand.

Do you guys think that is possible to do so? or is there any suggestion for using this mile? I don't travel a lot (just home to college twice a year), so redeeming hotel voucher or something won't work, I guess.

Should I call or just upgrade through the website?

Thanks in advance

Yes its possible.. the earlier you do it , the better, as seats are still available to process your upgrade. I think that's a great way to use the miles.

The wait time is sometimes very long except for Marco Polo Silver and up. Try the website if possible, unless the web page is broken or if you need to waitlist.

I bet the JFK/HKG/BKK route is pretty popular for upgrades, and you are probably travelling at a peak period. So yes, the earlier you do it the better. If you call in, you can ask to be put on a waitlist if there are no immediately available redemptions. But remember elite MPC members get priority, so if you aren't, then chances are probably low.

Actually, what makes you think that it is not possible to do so when there is availabilty..?
Buying ticket and redeem for upgrade is the basic idea for joining a FFP, right..???

Yeah, thanks everyone.

I was just thinking that it might be hard to get that as I've never tried. But,now I will try! My point was just I want to find the way to use my soon-to-be expire mile the most efficient I can.
