Cathay Equipment Changes
Hi Folks,
Just want to get some information regarding your past experiences with Cathay equipment changes. I do notice that the North America-HKG routes there is the YVR-HKG route that uses the 343 plane with no first class seats at all. Am I corrrect? I'm asking because I will be flying YVR-HKG in December on a Saturday and according to Cathay schedule, it will be operated by a 744 (only M-W-Th flights that are operated by a 343). Are there any chance that the plane will be switched from the 744 to 343? Since I will be flying in F award I don't want to be downgraded for sure. You guys have any experiences to share? I know that within Asia equipment changes occur all the time but how "fixed" is it for NA-HKG routes?
Thank you for all your responses.

Isn't CX838/839 now operated by a mix of 343 and 744s in certain days? i think the 744 operates 4 times a week and 343 3 times a week. I know how you would feel if u have been downgraded.

Sure, there's a chance. But, in my experience, equipment changes on the longhaul flights are pretty rare. On the regional flights, however, it's like playing aircraft roulette and aircraft swaps never seem to benefit us (F to J downgrade).

The common switch for long haul usually occurs within the same type of aircraft with different configurations such as 74A (new seats) into 744 (old seats) v.v. or 34B (new seats) into 34D (old seats). But with all 747s having already been converted into 74As for quite some time now (same goes for all 343s into 34Bs), this configuration switch debate no longer is an issue at all.
The upcoming winter schedule has already been updated back in August. So what you see Oct 31-Mar 26 should hold up. So for the OP traveling in two months, it is highly unlikely there will be a switch from a three class to a two class metal.
The only high possibility of winter schedule a/c switch I see are some NA flights currently scheduled with the 74A may be replaced with the 77A as more orders for that equipment come in.
