Seat Assignment on DragonAir

Seat Assignment on DragonAir
Apologies if the answer to this can be found elsewhere but I've searched and can't see anything. Also, I'm completely new to the whole Cathay/Dragon experience....
My partner and I are flying from Hong Kong to Phuket on a Dragon Air flight next year (booking class X) and I was attempting to get seat assignments sorted on line. At the moment the system is allowing me to select my seat but not my partner's (who's on the same reservation).
I spoke to Cathay customer service about this and asked if it had anything to do with me holding OW Sapphire status and my partner not but they appeared bemused saying I shouldn't even be able to select my seat (not until 48hrs before departure).
Anyone else come across this? Any solutions?
Also, does QW Sapphire status give any preference on exit row seats normally?

I am not sure you can do much about your partner's seat selection. I also feel unusual that you could select your seat online for an award booking too.
CX has been "selling" the extra legroom seat (except for MPC elites), but I don't know if that is the case for KA. If you are willing to pay extra (but USD100 is a lot for a 2-3 hr flight), perhaps you can ask if you can get an extra legroom seat.
