I guess a more valid statement would be to check-in the bag as late as possible
I often check-in online as soon as the facility is available but drop bags right before the flight is closed at the airport. I have not encountered bags coming out last (in fact always among the first or second batch) when tagged with priority label. Finger crossed.
A strange situation occured last week when I did SIN-HKG-TPE-HKG on the same day (yes an ex-TPE D class, which is still massively cheaper than ex-HKG or ex-PVG business). Haved to explain to the check-in agent at Changi to tag my luggage based on the route I took with final destination in HKG. After working on the computer for a while with the supervisor, they asked me to go ahead and will pass to me the luggage tag at the gate. However no luggage tag was waiting for me at the gate, and upon enquired, was asked to board and someone will bring me the tag. Finally gotten it right before the door was closed, and surprised to find it a hand-written one. When I reached HK eventually, I found the luggage tag to be entirely hand written. Glad they did not lose my luggage though ^

Just wonder was your luggage on your HKG-TPE-HKG flight too?

Yes ! the luggage was flying with me on all routes. Initially I thought of just checking in for the first leg (i.e. SIN-HKG) then I would come out to retrieve it and store it at the left baggage. Did not actually go ahead because it seems too much trouble. I gave the benefit of doubt to CX and baggage handling crew and I am not dissapointed.

At YYZ the baggage handling staff consider it a stain on their honour if the F-tagged bags don't come out last.
