Does this mean that the flight is empty?

Seatcounter shows plenty of seats available in all Economy classes;

When i do online check in 48 hrs before hand, can choose from so many seats:

any idea which seats are recommended?

At the moment, I chose a seat at the back at the aisle (64H), hoping that if it's an empty flight, there wouldn't be anyone beside me and that I can stretch out and occupy all 3 seats. Do you think chances are good that it is an empty flight?

I am surprised since I am flying HKG-JFK on Christmas Day, arrival on Christmas night at 8pm. I thought it is the peak travel season! What more flying on Christmas Day

Btw, is it true that J and K seats on 777-300ER have entertainment box under the seat as indicated on seatguru?

Online seat can be misleading. They are only open for MPC members and remember many fliers are not MPC members and don't assign their seats online before hand, so the plane could be potentially 80% full and most seats are taken, it is just that as MPC member you get first crack to pick your favor seats.

As for all 9s, yeah that pretty much says the plane is pretty undersold.

i am not a MPC member.

But well, I guess there could be many who don't pre select their seats before hand..

OLCI is open to anyone who travels on a CX- or KA-issued ETKT. Even the new "Manage Your Booking" allows virtually everyone to pre-select seats. It is true that many people do not assign their seats beforehand, but your explaination is far from the reality.
