Changes to "New" J seats
I was travelling SYD-HKG this weekend and walked through the J cabin on the A330 (33B). I noticed that the seats had been recovered with a much more pleasing fabric. It was smoother, and not made of that plasticky fake velvet. I'm sure it would mean that your clothes don't get stuck on the fabric as you try to slide around on it, and probably be less hot as well. The old fabric was terrible to look at, feel and made you feel so hot. And it looked old even on new aircraft.
Unfortunately I wasn't sitting in J this time so wasn't able to see if there were any other changes to the seat.

Ah..okay..it's not just me who noticed it. I was in J LAX-HKG (77A) in September and noticed the change in materials as well. I've asked one of pursers whether it's the case. She said it's the new J "seats" (and she looked at me like I have never seen CX new J seats :-P ) and was not aware of such change in the materials....
I agree with you that the new materials is much nicer and IMHO is much more comfortable.

Hopefully with the less grippy fabric the bed surrounds won't fall apRt when reclining and unreclining. Those thngs are only held by Velcro.

So I managed to fly in these refurbished seats. Some other changes I noticed:
- the headrest can now tilt forward and back
- the seat pad is slightly narrower so that it gives easier access to the magazine storage.
- the seat seems to be fixed so that it doesn't seem to be always tilting away from the from of the plane as if someone too heavy sat on it.
- the new fabric is definitely better. Easier to move around on, and doesn't feel too hot when sleeping.

I just flew back on a A33B and the J seats had the bad/old fabric. But the headrests could tilt back and forward. I'm certain there are some seats out there where the headrest can't tilt. I might be wrong though.
This was a refurbished A330 - had the old flight maps on the IFE.

Having travelled on the "new" J seat last week on 77A, I will agree that the fabric is much better than the previous ones. It gives the seat a more sturdy feel. It actually feels flatter also.
Hopefully, the new fabric is already installed in every 77A and 33B.

Just traveled on the "new" J with new fabric. Definitely better than the old fabric in terms of comfort, but I was on KPH, and the fabric was already looking worn out. I don't know how long the specific plane's been using this fabric, but i'm guessing at max for a year. I can't imagine how it'll be another year or two down the road...
Close up of fabric

And another thing: is it just me or does it feel like the seat has gotten wider? I feel like when i'm sitting in it, I now have ample space on each side of my bum to shift left and right, whereas I just felt cramped before...

I think the actual cushion is a little narrower to give easier access to the magazine holder.

I would not, could not, sit in CX coffins.
I could not, would not, with a drink.
I will not sit in them with a mate.
I will not sit in them on any plane.
I will not sit in them here or there.
I will not sit in CX J anywhere.
I do not eat fly CX J green seats or gray.
I do not like them, Sam-I-am.
In 2007 I tried them once moved on to BA in J now for good!
But ask me about CX F - Loving IT ^
