Gift.....what for?
Yesterday in F onboard CX879 during the latter stage of the flight, my GF and I were asked by the purser if we wanted to take a bottle of Deutz home with us. She did not state any reasons as to why we are being offered. She basically asked "Mr. ____ would you be interested in taking a bottle of Deutz Champagne with you home at the conclusion of the flight?". Not being a heavy drinker nor a big fan of that brand, we declined.
Nonetheless I was curious why she did not specify the reason behind this. We had a great flight & great service throughout the 14+ hour journey, everything worked out both on the intagibles and technical aspects, took off/landed as scheduled.......hence no ground for any form of compensation. It's without a doubt nothing else but good nature, but why? I've been presented with gifts onboard CX flights and all had a purpose behind them that I was informed of in some ways. Of course I could have asked but since we declined I didn't bother.
As I was listening through the IFE music when she approached and did not lower the volumes until she began speaking to me, I don't know if the other F passengers were presented with the same offer. But when we disembarked I did not see anyone holding a champagne bottle. Could be they were offered and declined or accepted & placed in their carryon that we weren't able to see, or simply we were the only passengers being presented with this offer. Has anyone else being given something unexpectedly and was not told the motive nor reasons behind it?
The purser by the way was one of the most upbeat and talkative (in a positive way) ones I've ever had. Prior to boarding at SFO, she even laughed and chatted in such charming manner with several passengers in the waiting area while waiting for the gate to be opened for the crews for their inflight preparation. Not sure if this nature has anything to do with the Deutz offer.

Probably because she likes you (and your girlfriend) and find the both of you good passengers. And she offered the extra courtesy as you are DM members as well.
Pursers do not need any reason to offer something out of the extraordinary. I was once offered a bottle of Krug, plus a bottle Lynch Bages just because the Purser found out I was from her home town too.
But really, if people reading this thread start getting ideas and start asking for freebies, you will be politely but firmly declined. Best to just wait for what is offered.

Indeed. While I haven't been that fortunate, I have received bottles of Krug twice on CX flights, both when I was the only pax HKG-LAX. Both times, the FAs figured out that I love Krug when I nearly finished a bottle by myself. It was a very kind gesture, typical of why I favor CX for my flights in and out of Asia.

Also, should I be lucky enough to be offered this (or any other liquid) type of gift, will we have to surrender the gift in HKG if we're transiting to another flight (flying to BKK) due to security/carry-on baggage check?

I wouldn't get your hopes up...the people posting above with those experiences seem to be pretty frequent (or at least were in the past) CX F pax

This is one of the small gestures that make me fly CX F with my wife. Cannot say that we are "frequent" flyers but take around 4 CX F flights together per year. Once was our wedding anniversary, once her birthday (actually day before). Without asking once we got a chocolate box and once a champagne bottle (alas not Krug, but Deutz from Biz class).I dont expect (and will not expect) such gestures, but they are very pleasing.
Once got a bottle of Dom on SQ F, but they realize that we were in transit in SIN and had to take it back as we could not get it through security. Too bad.

I also got this kind of gift a few times...at least 3+ that I remember. a few months ago we got a bottle of champagne when we were flying with our baby on her 11-month birthday in F (who I guess thought a bottle of milk is better than this), and a birthday card. we got a bottle too when one year we were flying together in J on my wife's birthday. and one time I got a bottle either in J/F when the purser said she does it to everyone whom she met in more than one flight (I was doing a turnaround that time).

Doused with champagne? Indeed I was, once. When a stewardess missed a step and the tray of drinks she was holding hurled themselves towards me. Aside from being drenched, we both had a good laugh.
But being given champagne while it's still firmly in the bottle, never. Sigh!
