Doing what we do best
I thought the topic on "labour problems brewing" was getting quite long, so I start here with a clear table.
First of all, to A Flygirl, Employee, wdk?, YYZAC, CPYVR, and any other CP/AC staff contributing to these discussions, I wish to thank you for providing your insights and shedding some light on the employee perspective. We also do enjoy the indsider's look at airline ops.
On to the discussion...
I think it is good that there seems to be a growing consensus that we do have two very good airlines in AC and CP. I am also glad to see some spirited discussion and debate in these FlyerTalk forums.
Unlike Empress, Ken hAAmer, BlondBomber, Shareholder, and many others here, I am far from a frequent flyer. Most of my fellow FlyerTalkatives here are frequent flying businesspeople. I am a graduate student and have the great fortune of an awesome academic advisor and excellent project that has sent me to many a conference and research lab and has let me fly more in the previous two years than all the rest of my life. I have no elite status, never flown in J class, and never seen the inside of a lounge (hence the name FewMiles). Nonetheless, you would be hard pressed to find people more enthusiastic (fanatical?) about flying than myself. Maybe one day I'll get the chance for award travel, an upgrade, or a lounge pass.
So, maybe I don't have the same understanding about loss of perks as the true frequenty flyers here, but I too can observe an erosion in the "little things". These are the little things that made CP and AC great airlines. I don't doubt everyone here would prefer a Canadian-based carrier to any other airline. No one else can make us feel at home away from home in quite the same way. This is what our airline(s) do best and is what we, the flying public, have come to expect. As Empress said, we've been spoiled.
So, to our employee friends out there: please don't let the airline(s) skimp on the upgrades, good food, amenity kits, overhead bin storage, low fares, or anything else we flyers collectively whine http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif about now and then.
Cheers,
FewMiles..

Once, long ago, I was a graduate student too. The fifth paragraph of your post reminded me of the days when simply getting on a plane and going somewhere was reward enough. Thank you - how quickly we forget.
Email me an address and I'll send you an Empress lounge pass good until Feb 2001 - I hope you get a chance to use it.
