If you miss the "old Maurya" and don't mind a trek out to the burbs, this place is very good:

Bombay Bhel

We tried it once, about 2 years ago, on a Saturday afternoon. Posted on a thread here that it was terrible.

Looking for something close to BC Place

I'm looking for a good place to grab a bite to eat and have a drink with friends before the U2 concert at BC Place in a few weeks - any recommendations of stuff close by / walking distance from the stadium?

I was thinking about a place called The Greedy Pig in Gastown - anyone been there? http://thegreedypig.ca/

Or have other recommendations of stuff in the area? I've heard gastown can be pretty bad (its been ages since I've been down there) - how is the walk from there to the stadium?

Thanks

I guess it depends what "walking distance" means to you.
In gastown i would suggest GUU
Otherwise just walk around yaletown and find something to grub on.

Try Chambar on Beatty, but reserve ahead. Good Belgian-inspired food. Great beer list. Trendy but not too fancy. Closer to BCP.

I give +1 to Bistro Pastis, Guu (the one in Gastown is my favourite), and Chambar (and not to mention for brunch their sister & neighbour restaurant Cafe Medina). All on my regular rotation for going out.

Market in Shangri-La is also pretty good. Awesome lunch deal.

Only if you eat in the restaurant. The furniture in the bar is ridiculous for anyone over four feet tall.

Went to the C Restaurant during my recent trip to Vancouver and it was a disappointment. The seafood was not fresh, service was mediocre and somewhat over priced for what one got.

Thought I'd tack onto this dining thread with Mia Stainsby's recently published top 25 under $25 list in the weekend Vancouver Sun.
General story: http://www.vancouversun.com/life/und...713/story.html
and list: http://www.vancouversun.com/life/und...737/story.html

Some of the suggestions are a bit questionable for this list IMO but still an interesting list of cheap eats.

But here's the list in case the links die...
Burbs
ANATOLIA'S GATE
7084 Kingsway, Burnaby, 604-525-2519
www.anatolias.ca
I love the balloony lavash here; for savouries, it's Middle Eastern and Turkish food with some blistering hot pizza thrown in (why not make full use of the stone oven, right?). Kebabs, wraps, stone oven dishes, curries.

C-LOVERS FISH & CHIPS
Pinetree Village, 2991 Lougheed Highway Coquitlam, 604-464-3611;
20251 Fraser Highway Langley, 604-532-9747;
555 Clarke Rd. Coquitlam, 604-936-2447;
7670 Vedder Rd. Chilliwack, 604-824-7959;
32451 South Fraser Way Abbotsford, 604-859-9747;
13767 -72nd Ave. Surrey, 604-590-2216
A franchise, which is why you'll see them here, there, everywhere. The deal-seekers go for $10.95 all-you-can eat offerings on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, or every other day, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Choice of halibut, cod or haddock. Another bargain is the $22 platter for two, with halibut fingers, prawns, onion rings, chips and coleslaw.

ESTRELLA'S
5932 -200th St. Langley, 604-539-9988
www.estrellasdeli.com
In a sea of tire and transmission shops, but that doesn't stop Montreal-smoked-meat fans from near and far. The owner worked in the biz in Brooklyn, N.Y., and in Montreal. The brisket is dry-cured and steamed for several hours. Served on rye; priced from $6 for the small, up to $18 for the one-pounder, which really, you ought to share. (Not open for dinner.)

FUJIYA
3086 Edwards Drive, Richmond, 604-270-3715
912 Clark Drive, Vancouver, 604-251-3711;
www.fujiya.ca
It's more Japanese grocery store than restaurant but there are some seats where you can have lunch or a very early dinner from the array of sushi, bento boxes, donburi, and entrees in the deli counter; all under $10.

HI GENKI
6680 Southoaks Cres., Burnaby, 604-777-0533
Home-style Japanese food served in the Nikkei Museum and Heritage Centre is intended for the residents of the seniors centre but it's open to the public as well. Full meals, under $10, include donburi, udon, salmon katsu, sukiyaki don, bento combinations as well as side dishes.

KURUMBA RESTAURANT
3003 St. Johns St., Port Moody, 604-461-2245
www.kurumbarestaurant.com
Chinese, Sri Lankan, Thai, Singaporean and Malaysian dishes reflect the places the owner has lived. Dishes are true to the cuisines. Beef kotthu roti is a hawker-style dish of roti strips, stir-fried with beef, onions, egg; sambal green beans are intensely flavoured with, you have it: sambal sauce. Sri Lankan beef tripe curry, however, is best reserved for the tripe-initiated diner.

MASTER HUNG BBQ RESTAURANT
8780 Blundell Rd., Richmond, 604-272-3813
Wonderful barbecued meats. Hung Chow had 20 years of experience in Hong Kong where he learned secrets of barbecuing that he holds close to his chest. An order of barbecued meat (duck, chicken, or roast sucking pig) and another of noodles or veggies and you have dinner. Soup and dessert come with the meal. Reservations are smart.

STEVESTON PIZZA
3400 Moncton, Steveston, 604-204-0777;
14016 -32nd Ave., White Rock, 604-542-0400
www.stevestonpizza.com
The owner once worked at Bacchus at Wedgewood and has a high regard for quality. Pizza specialty toppings include port-marinated pulled bison/enoki/ pearl onions/red wine thyme confit and caramelized duck confit/bocconcini/enoki/chive/ tomato relish. A medium pizza should fill and thrill two.

SUMMER NIGHT MARKET
12631 Vulcan Way, Richmond
www.summernightmarket.com
Hawker-style food from across Asia for a few coins in this carnival-like atmosphere. This year, the food area's changed up a bit, with more non-Asian vendors hawking Greek, Italian and other dishes. I'll stick to the Asian. I love the "balls," that is, the octopus balls and waffle balls. You'll find Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Malaysian and Singaporean stalls. The Night Market's opening night is Friday.

TAMARIND HILL
1440 Lonsdale Ave., North Vancouver, 604-990-0111;
628 Sixth Ave. New Westminster, 604-526-3000
www.tamarindhill.ca
Several kinds of laksa, Malaysia's delicious street dish, all under $10. Noodle dishes such as Hokkien mee and the boneless Hainanese chicken with a couple of roti canai would coast in under $25. A 10-per-cent discount for takeout.

Vancouver
VANCOUVER ACME CAFE
51 West Hastings St., 604-569-1022
www.acmecafe.ca
Comfort food at comfort prices in the gentrifying Downtown Eastside. Chef is a former cooking school instructor. The daily crock-pot supper feature is $12.50, mac and cheese is $8, meat loaf is $11.50. Take their motto seriously: Keep your fork, there's pie.

AP GU JUNG
1642 Robson St., 604-681-8252
www.apgujungrestaurant.ca
It's time you learned to love Korean food, so robust and flavourful and fiery. Ap Gu Jung's grilled and barbecued meats and casserole-like meals offer delicious value; I found seafood isn't the strength here. Meals come with pickled sides of kimchee, bean sprouts, seaweed, and potatoes.

AU PETIT CAFE
4851 Main St., 604-873-3328
www.aupetitcafe.com
Family-run, modest in appearance, and in price, nothing's over $10. The banh mi and pho are delicious. Other meals, including lemongrass chicken, curry beef stew are such deals.

BANANA LEAF
820 West Broadway, 604-731-6333;
3005 West Broadway, 604-734-3005;
1099 Denman St., 604-683-3333
www.bananaleaf-vancouver.com
A couple of seafood dishes might tip you over the $25 budget but there are plenty of other choices under meat, vegetables and noodles, many of them gutsily flavourful, such as sambal green beans, braised lamb shank in cumin and star anise, and curry boneless chicken.

CHAU KITCHEN & BAR
1500 Robson St., 604-682-8020
www.chaukitchenandbar.com
A modern take on Vietnamese food. Portions are smaller than old-school but food is more refined. You have your Buddha bowl for $11 (mushroom/ lychee/date stock with rice noodles and seasonal veggies); 17-spice beef shortribs, beef stew with toasted baguette; Asian eggplant with Vietnamese sake and butter garlic sauce.

EL TACO
788 Davie St., 604-806-0300
www.eltaco.ca
Tamales, burritos, quesadillas, tacos, enchiladas and tequila, too. The Sayulita salad is pumped with organic greens, avocado, seeds and lime cilantro dressing.

GALLERY CAFE
Vancouver Art Gallery 750 Hornby St., 604-688-2233
www.thegallerycafe.ca
The fab patio is a huge draw but the cafeteria-style food really delivers for the price range (no dish over $11). The choices change daily (herb-crusted halibut over penne with white wine cream sauce and butter chicken were on when I called); there are salads, soups, quiche, as well as entrees. Open into evening with live music from June 1 (open to 9 p.m. only on Tuesdays until then).

GO FISH
1505 West First Ave., 604-730-5040
Until spot prawn season's done, you can get a half pound, done differently every day, with salad and toasted bun for $12. How great is that? This is primo al fresco real estate from which to absorb glorious Vancouver. Neighbourhood eagles, fisherman's wharf and Granville Island across the creek. Po' boys, fish tacos, grilled fresh seafood, fish sandwiches, daily soups. (Hint: Go when it's raining; the lines shrink.) Closes at 6:30, sharp.

GORILLA FOOD
436 Richards St. 604-684-3663
www.gorillafood.com
For green, health-conscious eaters, Gorilla has an ambitious and interesting menu of organic, vegan, raw-food dishes; monkey sandwiches use house-made veggie flax "bread" or curry squash "bread." Noodles, pizza, rice and burger buns are all made from dehydrated vegetables.

HOLY TRINITY UKRAINIAN ORTHODOX CATHOLIC CHURCH
154 East 10th Ave., 604-875-4747
www.uocvancouver.com
On the first Friday of each month, church members put on a supper. Six pyrogies, two cabbage rolls, sausage and sauerkraut costs $11. Vegetarian and mini versions available. Prepare for lines at this community hall-like arrangement.

NUBA
207-B West Hastings St., 604-688-1655;
1206 Seymour St., 778-371-3266;
146 East Third Ave., 604-568-6727
Nuba takes you well past the falafel and hummus level of Lebanese food with dishes such as fattoush salad, chicken tawook, lamb kafta, and mjadra in pita.

PEACEFUL RESTAURANT
532 West Broadway, 604-879-9878
www.peacefulrestaurant.com
Like the neighbouring Shao Lin, noodlemakers here spin a piece of dough into an amazing array of noodles. The northern-style cuisine is bold and varied with dishes like cilantro lamb, black tea-smoked duck and Mandarin mu shu pork.

SARAVANAA BHAVAN
955 West Broadway, 604-732-7700
www.saravanaabhava.ca
Nothing costs more than $10 here. I'd go for the two-foot dosas that come with coconut, mint and tomato chutneys, and lentil soup. South Indian dishes such as baji, idli and tiffin meals.

TUNG HING BAKERY
1198 Kingsway, 604-875-3394
www.tunghingbakery.ca
Ignore the "bakery" sign. For $2.75 to $3.25, they'll make fresh bahn mi (Vietnamese baguette-wiches) that'll do you for supper. If it's not enough, add two or three more; it hardly dents the bottom line. Or add a barbecue pork bun. For bahn mi filling, choose from garlic or lemongrass chicken, honey garlic sausage, or meatballs. Daikon, cilantro, cucumbers, carrots and jalapeno add zip. (In Toronto, there are five Tung Hings. This one is run by a son.)

WHOLE FOODS MARKET
510 West Eighth Ave., Vancouver, 778-370-4821;
925 Main St. West Vancouver, 604-678-0500
www.wholefoodsmarket.com/stores/canada/
The deli areas of these two store are a feast for the eyes. Hot foods, cold foods, salad bar, pizzas, panini, sushi, free-range whole cooked chickens, seafood, vegetarian, all made with healthy ingredients.
