When pre-clearing US customs at YVR, are you supposed to go up to a customs agent yourself or with your group of friends you're travelling with? I forget... I haven't flown out of YVR with friends to the States in a few years. We've either flown out of Seattle or I've just travelled with my wife. TIA.

In your context by yourself.
Just make sure all your stories match up - If you say you're going to Vegas for a holiday and then your buddy behind you says the two of you are going to Vegas and then on to LA you may get pulled out at secondary - It happned to a friend of mine.

Thanks for the replies. I kind of figured it was standard to go up alone or with same household family. I think I got confused because I think I recall in the past (definitely over 3 yrs ago but post 9/11), I was travelled with some friends to HNL and the customs dude was interviewing my buddy and then just waved the rest of us over (five of us in total). The reason I remember we were all at the booth was because I recall us getting all our passports back in a stack and laughing at the pictures to figure out which passport to give back to who.
Anyways, that's probably the exception. Will go up alone and let the customs dude wave my friends over if he feels like it.

Exactly - The first guy up to the booth can say "I'm going to Hawaii with those guys" (and wave back at the rest of you). The booth officer can then decide whether or not to call you all over.
