I wish to be centrally located. Something suitable for a romantic getaway would be appreciated. While the Chateau Frontenac would seem to be just what the doctor ordered, I have read many complaints that it is overpriced, that the quality of the rooms is inconsistent and that it is generally not worth it.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks,
M.

Hotel Chateau Bellevue is a great little hotel within the walls of Old Quebec. Small hotel - good location - clean - cozy - no restaurant there though
www.vieuxquebec.com 1-800-463-2617 I would stay there again.

I really liked the Frontenac, great location and very nice room. The caveat is that as a Platinum with Fairmont I never end up in the small rooms so this was not the lowest class of room, indeed I believe it was a couple steps up (hmmm..although last summer I was only Premier but still got an upgrade).
The fitness centre and pool are newly renovated and very enjoyable. There is definitely an ambiance in the hotel and the staff provided exemplary service. Certainly would love to stay there again

Have not stayed there yet but a friend swears by it and has been there a few times now but the Auberge St Antoine is right below the Chateau and in the heart of the matter in lower town.
Send a PM to "nordsfan" or "nords fan" as he lives in Quebec and knows everyplace in town very very well.......he's on a biz trip in France right now but will be back on Thursday if you can wait that long. He'll be glad to help and will buy you a beer if he's in ton when you are there. I don't think he'll recommend the Chateau.

Auberge du Tresor
This is the economy concept for Quebec City.....located across the street from the Frontenac. Only 22 rooms, but they have a romance package. Thus, the price is right and the location is great. Decent restaurant downstairs.
It may be a little too economical for most posters on this board.
I stayed there for 2 nights in October 2004 for about C$110/night.

I love the Frontenac. As Altaflyer mentioned, it helps if you are a Fairmont Presidents Club elite, but the hotel is in a fantastic location, it has lots of character and it's on every postcard in the city.
I've also stayed at the Loewe's Concorde, and it's a nice hotel--just nothing to rave about.

Less Pricy.. Consider Hilton Quebec
I have been in Hilton Quebec every summer since 2000. It's right outside of the walls, easy to walk into the old city. The Hilton Quebec has very nice view (you can see sunrise from the room every morning, night view of the old city), not as pricy as the Chateau Frontenac, and the lounge provides exellent breakfast (if you are Hilton Gold)!
