Niagara Falls

I will be visiting Niagara Falls later this week, and would like any information on what to see/do besides the Falls itself. Plan to spend 1-1/2 days around Niagara, and another day or two exploring the Canada side. Perhaps a trip to Toronto? Interested in the culture/history of the area. Thanks. Any suggestions on restaurants would also be appreciated.

Tons of options:

1) The Shaw Festival at Niagara-on-the-Lake. One of the premiere theatre festivals in Canada. (And it's not just for Shavian scholars.) http://www.shawfest.com/

2) Winery tours. There are some very good wineries in the Niagara region. A cycle tour through the area can be great. http://www.niagaraworldwinetours.com/

3) There is a great deal of War of 1812 History in the region. (Remember, that's the one where we burned down the White House... )

Fort George and the Battlefield House Museum in Stoney creek are worthwhile.

The Molson Indy Toronto is also this weekend.

You can see the CART FedEx Championship Series, CART Toyota Atlantics, Dayton Indy Lights, Barber-Dodge, and CASCAR race on the streets around Exhibition Place.

Yours truly will be flagging the race at Turn 11A. Flying from Portland to Toronto tomorrow.

I myself am gonna check out Niagara Falls on thursday, before the 3 days of racing beginning on friday morning.

See these sites for info ..

As far as restuarants go, you may want to try "On The Twenty" www.onthetwenty.on.ca. Great food, wonderful atmosphere.

Niagara on the Lake is a must see - even if you don't go to the Shaw festival. It's a great little town, much of a british flavor (similar to Victoria, BC that way).

While on the US side, you're not far from the Finger Lakes area (with many, many wineries). Buffalo and Rochester both have some nice museums and galleries to visit.

Try the local "ice wine," if so inclined!
