The nice bonus about driving instead of flying (other than avoiding hotel jail) is that I can load up with groceries at Trader Joes before crossing the border. Will be nice for that 14 day home quarantine.

I have two one way rentals booked from Seattle to Vancouver. I chose Budget but Avis, National and Hertz were options as well. I have checked dates in March for a friend and couldn’t find anything, maybe because of spring break? But I had no problem booking for April and May.

I found that enterprise/alamo give options SEA-YVR mid-March but only if the booking is 4 days or longer? Pricing about $1300. However, some city locations are quoting much lower rates.

national has availability in April but weirdly availability only shows if the reservation is more than one week (1170/week).

I've had to book up to a week. I've returned the car after 24 hours and only been charged the 1 day rate. Maybe you can have the same luck. |
I crossed the buffalo peace bridge border last night. I used an airport shuttle service. You just tell them when you want to get picked up and they will drive you across.
make sure you do your arrivecan before you arrive and you’ll save time by registering at switchhealth beforehand. I didn’t know about it but it was not a problem. step one is the border guard. They want passport, test results, your arrivecan receipt and you have to read a silly covid statement out loud. You have to answer a bunch of questions as well. The guard then gives you 2 covid test kits. step two is to drive up to Red Cross Canada. There you will use one of the kits you were given and give yourself a covid test. The Red Cross people will walk you through it. You collect a sample and hand it over. The second covid test kit is for use on day 10. Apparently you have to get on a call with public health while you do it and they will send UPS to collect the sample. |

how long is step 2 with red cross? Do you have to wait there for the results or do they call you?

I was there about 10 - 15 minutes. That includes me having to register on switch health as well on my phone. Doing just the test is about a 10min process I’d say. You don’t wait for the results. I was told that the results will be published on switch healths website in 1-3 days so you have to login and check.

I put the dates in Priceline, selecting cities locations instead of airport locations, and it gave several options at about 300CAD for 4 days. I went to Enterprise, put in those pairs and it accepted it. If you change the location, the rental was unavailable or price shot up to 1300. Not sure if it will be honored - maybe the local manager will refuse? Also, I tried Bellingham and Paine, and they seemed to be 1300 as well. Here's an example:

Over the years, domestic with return to same location, I've had issues with finding availability for shorter term rentals.
