Something that I think hasn't been mentioned here is that YUL actually is different than airports like YVR and YYZ T1. The international departure area isn't separate from the domestic area at YUL, so you are doing a full-fledged entry to Canada when you are doing a US to international connection. It still shouldn't be a difficult entry for most.

I just took a peek at the Montreal-Trudeau website and it appears they recently separated the Domestic and International departure zones. The real point is these airports, in conjunction with Air Canada and others have designed the transfer process to be as painless as possible. Agree with the other poster... if this is causing angst then the wise alternative might be just to never leave your house.
