Flights to Toronto
Ok, why is it so expensive to find flights for less than 400$ to Toronto (from Austin).. One can travel half way round the world for than, but not hop across the border ??
Tried one way fares, skyscanner, yapta, aus-buf-yyz, no way I slice or dice it, I can get it to work less than US$ 425 ..and direct flight good lord $630..
any one can crack this one ?

It doesn't explain all of it but there is ~$140 in taxes on the flights I am seeing leaving about $300 for the airfare itself. You could look into getting to MDW, IAD, PIT, BOS or EWR and connect via PD to YTZ. If you're booking far enough in advance a RT from those cities to YTZ can be under $160 with taxes.

I've been flying to Toronto regularily for the last 7 years and prices are always high. Looking back at my spreadsheet the lowest RT fare I've ever paid was just this past Dec for $580 from DEN. Average fares are usually between $700-$1000.
If price is your top concern then I second the option of flying into BUF instead and either driving or Megabus. Otherwise Southwest to MDW then a Porter flight to Billy Bishop airport (YTZ) might save you some cash.

Megabus Canada, Megabus USA, and Greyhound Canada, all have service out BUF to Toronto but it is a long ride and there are only a couple of trips on each - and the prices vary. You might be able to book a through fare on Porter in its partnerships via Midway. If you do choose BUF, then consider a rental car and staying where you can park it for free. There are GO train stations on your way in where you could leave the car for your return.

Because the distance is long, there are a lot of taxes on flights to Canada, and the customer base is probably mostly business travelers who can afford to pay more.
Usually nonstop flights to/from smallish cities that aren't an airline hub will be expensive. That's just how it goes.

Found a very short sale a few years ago. Believe it or not, DFW-YYZ $224 US all in 
Sadly I could not go, but my friend was looking to DRIVE this - actually only reason I looked at fares on this route, as much as I love Toronto (to visit - done with Canadian winters except wet coast).
