Senators to be banned from taking pricey flights

Bulk air tickets, cheaper flights to be mandated in new rules to be announced next week

http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/sena...ghts-1.3080878

Starting at the end of the Senate session in June, senators will no longer be able to fly business class on short-haul flights between Ottawa and home base.

The change will be in line with rules for members of Parliament, including cabinet ministers, which disallow flying business class on flights of less than two hours.
Note that until April 2013, flight passes weren't mandated for MPs either.

If they flight passes they're allowed to buy are Latitude, then it won't make much difference in the composition of the J cabin.

Should ban senators from flying altogether and just keep em at home. Will save us even more money at no societal cost.

Seems entirely reasonable to me, although if they're going to by Latitude flight passes, the government may not save that much money.

Slightly OT, but could CBC not find a more recent photo? Not only does that one have the old paint job, but an AC 747 too. Long time ago!

Further OT

The photo is credited to a Norm Betts/Bloomberg, which is fine.
But CBC likely couldn't post a more recent photo because that would because the person who does this was probably on break somewhere on Front St, or they didn't consider calling the Canadian Press or Air Canada for something a little less nostalgic.

Why flight passes?

I agree that flight passes are the best deal for people who have to travel last minute.

But given that senators don't do much really urgent work, you'd think that they could plan their schedules such that most of the time, they could just buy Tango or Flex as many taxpayers are forced to do?

And that they were allowed to buy J for short flights like YOW - YYZ is completely ridiculous!

Entitled indeed. Sheesh

Air Canada needs them, Senators used to fly PAID business class, so its another subsidy for Air Canada.

Or they could just get rid of the Senate and save us all from having to pay for and hear about the shenanigans of a largely useless body.

I'm surprised to hear they could still book Biz class for short haul flights - seems ridiculous to be spending that much for paid J on a 1 hour flight. Even the updated threshold of paid J on 2+ hour flights seems ridiculously low compared to many corporate travel policies.
