Cool

Drink some beer. You'll fit right in.

Depends on timing. Would you want to sleep? 16 hours is certainly enough to see a fair amount of the city.

agree with Niagara Falls. Or hit the casinos there. A not so short tour of Toronto would work too.

About how much would it cost to rent a car to the falls? Isn't gas really expensive in Canada?

How many are you?
Age(s)?
Family vs friends vs couple?
What do you like to do?

Toronto and the area can be a lot of fun.

As for cost. Do you have a strict budget for this layover. Car rental costs depend on a lot of variables. When you book. Which company. Any discount codes you have access to...
Gas is more expensive in Canada than most of the US if that is where you're coming from, but YYZ-Niagra Falls isn't that far so fuel costs will not be that bad.

And since there is limited public transportation options from the airport, a taxi, shuttle, etc. will end up costing you more than a rental car anyway.

You could also tour CN Tower if the weather is nice, but I think Niagara Falls and the nearby quaint Niagara on the Lake village would be a better choice. Great wines, but then again, you are off to Paris.
Plus you won't have to worry about the Toronto traffic, which can be problematic.

If you go to Niagra Falls, remember the US side is more worth the drive....but you better have proper documentation to cross the border !

I disagree. I went to University in Buffalo and went to NF many times. I wouldn't say the US side is more worth the drive. The Canadian falls are more visually impressive and NF USA is pretty rundown.

There is a bus to the nearest subway station that cost 3$.

Going to the city will probably be more fun than the falls if you are there during the winter.

+1

I've been several times over the past 6 or 7yrs and most recently this past summer. The US side is actually kind of gross. Canadian side is much better.

Seriously? No, gas is not significantly more expensive in Canada. It's certainly not cheaper. On my latest road trip, I'd say gas might be 20% higher.

Car rental rates from Pearson can vary significantly, from $20 to $80 per day.

Pearson to Niagara Falls is about 90 minutes if traffic is moderate.

Certainly allow lots of time to get back to the airport.

You won't find many people who argue that the US side is better than the Canadian side.

The Canadian side has far better views, far more things to walk to and enjoy, and far more attractions. The US side has a nice park.
