Canadian Customs Question
If I am flying from CDG -> YUL -> YYZ where will I clear customs?
The way I understand it now I collect my bags in YUL, clear customs, then recheck my bag in YUL to YYZ. If this is the case, how would carry on duty free work? Do I have to clear security again in YUL? That means I wouldn't be able to carry it on the flight onto YYZ.
Any insight is appreciated.

Yes, you will clear customs at your first point of entry - in this case, YUL.
Unless somethings changed recently, you will have to recheck your bag and go through security again for the domestic leg. Any liquid duty free will have to be checked in.

You will clear customs at YUL and have to take your luggage to re-check it for the next flight. European secure bags should be accepted through ongoing security (I know they are at YYZ), but since you do have access to your luggage, you can also just re-pack things.

Note that if you're on Air Canada, you may be on one of the new 'sardine cans' - The high-density 777s. Lots of issues re checked bags etc. on these new birds.
The thread is gigantic, but you may want to review some of the issues outlined in the trip reports here -

I've done it myself several times; as long as it's in the sealed bag, with the receipt clearly shown through it, you drop it in a security bin. A CBSA agent will take the bag, tell you that they need to verify it's safe, and take it to a scanner.
They'll pierce the bag to sample the air, so you will not be able to take it through security again, but after that you can bring it on your next flight.

No air analysis is done by CATSA. Ionic mobility spectography for explosive particles perhaps, but not air analysis. The swabs are always performed on hard surfaces.
