Using a photo of your ID as ID

A coworker was scheduled to fly home last week YUL-YYZ. A few hours before her flight her wallet was stolen, which included all her ID and money. She was with some other folks, so getting to the airport wasn't a problem. However, getting on the plane I would think would be a problem. She explained the situation to the gate agent and showed her a picture of her passport that was on her phone. And it worked!

It was only to board a domestic Canadian flight to prove identity. That might not work in Smurfland but I have read FT post about a Costco ID being accepted.

I too keep a photo of my passport photo/info page for the same reason along with few other important IDs password protected and encrypted.
