VIA Preference expiry?

The rules say your points expire if there's no activity for 3 years. There's nothing stating your expiry date and checking for activity only goes back to Apr 1/09 (Marriott is similar, 2 years to expire and 13 months' activity).

Is this expiration rule new? And do they enforce it? Is there any way to know your expiry date?

Thanks!

The VIA Preference expiry date is very much enforced.. I only took the train once, but got the frequent traveler card anyways.. The points are no longer there lol, I went YYZ-YUL (sorry I'm talking airport codes lol).. back in 07 with the train..
