DriverTalk (Nunavut)

Can anyone tell me if there is any way to drive into Nunavut without having to fly somewhere first? Meaning a road that is continuous with the bulk of the highway system. I am talking about driving somewhere/anywhere in any part of Nunavut, just to be able to say that I have been there. A gravel road would be OK.

I see that it is very expensive to fly. I am only interested in "filling the square" .

OK, to make this appropriate for FlyerTalk, I will certainly fly from my home to the starting point of the drive (if there is one).

Nope, there are no 'official' roads connecting Nunavut to the rest of Canada. There are roads and vehicles inside the towns in Nunavut, but you can't drive into the territory.

Almost everything comes in by air or ship (barge).

The one exception is the Tibbitt to Contwoyto Ice Road:

This is the heavy-haul (truckers only) ice road built across the frozen lakes and rivers. It's open for 2 months of the years to service the mines in the Canadian Arctic.

How about driving, then walking?

"There is currently one winter road that provides access to the western portion of Nunavut from the Northwest Territories during the months of February to March. A person could also drive to James Bay via the James Bay Road in Quebec and then walk out 50 metres or so on the frozen ice to one of the rock formations in the water. All islands in James and Hudson Bay are a part of Nunavut, therefore a person can drive and then walk to Nunavut."

There has been talk of building a road to Rankin Inlet, but I wouldn't expect to be able to drive there for many years.

Though 2007 is already 3 years in the past, so I have no idea what the actual status of the road is.

AC flies from YOW or YUL to YFB. From there you can take FirstAir to other points in Nunavut. If you have enough points with StarAlliance, you may want to consider a reward ticket to YFB.
