Flying SIN to YQB

I've been lurking around this forum for some time and this is my first post, would appreciate some opinions

What are the options available for travel between SIN to YQB (or vice versa)? I will be plying this route at least once or twice a year. Previously I have gone via Delta as they offer one of the cheapest flights available (SIN - NRT - DTW - YQB) but would like to know what other options there are, given that this is a very long flight with multiple stops. The most tiring leg of the journey is NRT - DTW, especially when it is usually a full flight on a 747-400.

Currently I am a Delta Skymiles silver medallion member, but I'm not certain if I should stick to flying with Delta or make a switch to another FFP.

Should I fly via Europe or the US, or bypass US and fly via Canada instead?

I would like to keep costs down if possible.

Thanks in advance!

My wife and I lived in SIN from 93 to 95 and flew home to Canada every year, sometimes twice, and usually hit YOW, YUL, YSJ on each trip. Our first few trips were accross the Pacific, usually SIN-HKG-YVR-YYZ-YOW/YUL. We found the multiple hops to be very hard on the body. We switched to a European routing, almost always SIN-AMS-YUL on KL. Back then, the connection times in AMS were long enough for an airside day bed, but not long enough for a hotel room. Despite the long layover, we found this routing to be much easier although YMMV.

We usually booked one year open returns with Club Voyages (offices in YOW, YUL). They specialized in KLM at the time. You might want to look into RTW fares which originate in SIN (or BKK or CMB) for flexibility and better fares.

PS Welcome to FT!

SIN is a great place to be based. Mme.13F and I did not take full advantage of all the regional travel opportunities at the time. If we had it to do over again, we would try to get out of SIN at least monthly for a long weekend.

Thanks for the reply!

I'll have to check out RTW passes... which alliance would you recommend?

It's not really my area of expertise, but *A has the most extensive network including members SQ where you will be and AC where you're from.

I have a friend who uses multiple RTW tickets per year. He likes to add "free" side trips from YOW to nearby places. As long as you stay under the MPM, it can be a great way to see some of SE Asia, although you may need to add the occassional LLC segment to close an open jaw.

Check out the *A forum here on FT for more info.
