Arriving into TBIT

Two weeks ago we arrived from Taipei into the Tom Bradley International Terminal. All I can say is "what a mess!" From our gate it seemed like we walked for two miles before finally arriving at immigration. Immigration was pretty easy and then we were put into another line to check in baggage to our flight to Atlanta.

My question is, can we just skip that line to check in baggage at TBIT since we had to wait to check in again at Terminal 5 - Delta counter? I was thinking we could have just pushed our bags down to Terminal 5, which is not really that bad of a walk. That would have saved us 45 minutes of waiting to check in our bags. Really a weird and outdated setup. Previously we have always connected through SFO, and their international terminal is so much more efficient. I doubt we will ever go through LAX again.

It is my understanding once you have cleared Customs you do not have to check in at the TBIT checkin. You can collect your bags and make your way to one of the Domestic Terminals to check in.
