The original (misguided, IMHO) plan was to build a station about a mile from the airport, with connecting vehicles, similar to what they have at BOS.

Then a local politico, Quentin Kopp, made a big stink and put up a ballot proposition in which SF voters explicitly stated their desire that the train should run into the airport.

Thanks, Mr. Kopp...

If the story is true, then indeed, many thanks are due to Mr. Kopp. I now live in Boston, and taking the shuttle bus from the airport T (Boston's subway) stop to the terminal is an annoyance, esp. after going up and down the stairs in various T stations while chanigng the trains and if it's cold outside. (There are so many issues with Boston...) Much better to have the rapid transit station right at the airport. So, good for SFO!

There's an interesting story about the history of the BART line in the Comicle this morning.

I drove down 101 today. What a strange site seeing a BART train take the track above me right into SFO. Coming back north later in the day, another train was crossing over the freeway. I'll have my first chace when I fly to London/Barcelona in July.

Good story on the first day on KCBS:
