Lineups - Orange County
I will be flying from Orange County, for the first time, on Jan 6 (going back to Ottawa, Canada, via Chicago, on UA).
What should I expect, in terms of time and extent of the security and check-in process? Note - I am a Star Alliance Gold (through Air Canada), so I can take the first class lineups with UA.

UA counter will be OK for check in, HOWEVER a BIG HOWEVER....
SNA (Orange County airport) in their infinite wisdom has NOT expanded their security checkpoint area, so the 3 checkpoint on the UA side of the terminal WILL be swamped (so will the other side of the terminal). If you have an early morning flight get into the airport aprox 5:45 AM, so you have plenty of time to go through security (sorry no UA *Gold/1K security line!). You can then at least use the Red Carpet Club at SNA once you have cleared security. The security time through is 25 - 55 minutes (this is AFTER you have checked in)
BTW: Mid day flights have minimum security lines

BTW: I'm going through the airport Jan 5th on the 2nd morning flight to ORD, then connecting to the BD flight to MAN.
If I get a chance I will update this thread with info on security clearance times for SNA

I was just out there, didn't fly out, but visited as was in the area for New Years.
I have heard that the place is a madhouse in the AM, so, grin and bear.
. It is a very domestic airport so it is weird to have pax only restrictions, the National Guard, and all that other stuff. I would still say that it is easier to fly out of than LAX, by a long shot. Also, they do a security check of the cars going into the parking lot, so that can cause delays as they usually have one officer checking all cars per entrance.

Belated posting... On Jan 5th for SNA/Orange County:
Check in times for UA (and other airlines on that side of the terminal) seemed normal. UA Premier Line was aprox 2 minute wait.
Security on that side of the terminal had a double backed line, aprox 20-25 minutes to clear. This was for a morning flight on a WEEKEND
"Your mileage may vary"... GREATLY on a weekeday
BTW: Parts of this post made it to the LA Times Travel section

When I arrived on Sunday, 6 months ago, for a 9 AM departure - the wait in the security line was almost 45 minutes. Yesterday, same time - the wait was 2 minutes.
I did not, on either occasion, notice a special line, for frequent flyers (I am a Star Alliance Gold member, through Air Canada's Aeroplan - I was flying on a UA flight).
