8 alternatives to Big Sur following bridge closure

Highlights
***

You can still make it to the upper reaches of Big Sur if you're willing to take a long detour — but for those who've decided to skip that trip this year, KPCC staff and listeners have eight alternate destinations to consider:
  1. See San Simeon’s elephant seals
  2. Walk through the Hearst Castle
  3. Hike at Pinnacles National Park
  4. Sleep at the Ragged Point Inn
  5. Explore Bodega Bay
  6. Wander through Calaveras Big Trees State Park
  7. Visit Mammoth Lakes
  8. Fish at June Lake

Just a note, KPCC is an LA-area radio station. This list reflects an assumption that visitors are driving north from L.A. Those traveling south from San Francisco, Oakland, or San Jose can reach the northern part of the central coast without a lengthy detour. In fact, there's no detour at all to visit the beautiful coastline from Half Moon Bay down through Santa Cruz to Monterey.
