Join every possible program
An e-mail I got yesterday from El Al served as a reminder to join every possible frequent flyer and frequent traveller program -- you can never tell when they will offer their members a deal which beats even the LCCs and budget hotels.
This particular offer was for a r/t from New York to TLV for $495 -- and included 400 bonus points (which on El Al means a free trip TLV-Europe and back). It is only open to members of their Matmid Frequent Flyer Program.
Signing up for each airline's, hotel, and car rental program requires a bit of time and means you will be getting some more spam -- but it also means that you will be alerted to great travel deals.

I have just researched joining Matmid, and this charge has now increased to $20. I've never before been charged to join a program! Is it worth the cost?
I will be traveling to Israel in December (my first visit), and am only investigating the El Al program because my flights (214/213) are not eligible to earn with American.
Thanks for the tips!

If you are flying in from Europe in Economy Matmid membership gives you an extra 5 kilos for your checked luggage (25 kilos instead of 20). No matter where you are flying from, membership will allow you to pre-select your seat.

I would imagine the 5 extra kilos of assorted Israeli chocolates are most definitely worth the Matmid membership. Pre-seat selection is a plus as well. Go for it!
