Many to most airlines in Africa are government owned (and run at a loss). Much traffic is government or busines: that is not cost senstive. In some countries the goverment owned airline is treated as a private airline for the President, his family and other hangers on. (he: shopping in Europe is important to the peasants !!)
At times can be cheaper to return to Europe compared to flying to a nearby country.
That is Africa

AirArabia has afaik a hub in CMN, they should offer cheap fares.

If you´re travelling in North Africa, look for the flights with Ryanair and Easyjet, maybe its cheaper to take a flight via Europe with them.

Not sure where you're going, but Ethiopia Air offers cheaper tickets if you book at least one international leg with them.

Another alternative might be to use miles. Kenya is a SkyTeam member so you could use Delta miles to book flights on them (I think).
