Cancellation Policy

I just made an online reservation, and noticed that I "may" be subject to 1 day's rental charge if I cancel within 24 hours of the rental.

I've never been charged such a fee by any rental company - and wonder if this is new, or if this has always been there and never enforced. Anyone have experience with this?

I've never been subject to a car rental cancellation fee, however, I have noticed that occasionally Hertz has had a cancellation caveat posted when making an Internet reservation.

I have not been subject to a cancellation policy on rentals with Avis or National, and I appreciate them for it and thus direct most of my business towards them (besides the fact that they offer me the best rates and service).

It is possible that car rental companies have and will consider an industry-wide cancellation policy, however, renting a car is such a different proposition that I don't believe a cancellation policy will be as effective as the one in the hotel industry.

I guess now you have one more thing to worry about ... remembering to cancel outside of the 24 hour period.

I've heard (but never seen myself on the few rentals I've done through them) that National will sometimes have a $25 no show fee on rentals ...

I've been a no show a couple of times, but never been charged the fee. Not to say that they won't charge it.. I think I remember a post where somebody did get charged.
