EEEEK Rates are WAY UP!

I have a couple of rentals coming up, one in MCO & another in HNL.

I was able to score a compact for a week at $126.50, which is about what I normally get (I made this reservation in Jan).

I'm now trying to get a convertible in HNL and/or KOA for a week each and the rates are almost$300 for the week!!!! I had one in Nov for $189.99 for the week, which I know was inexpensive. The compacts are going for $195.99 per week. At this rate, the cars are going to cost a bundle once you factor in the fees involved.

Is it me or have the prices gone through the roof?

Should I book something now & keep checking? I'd hate for it to get even more expensive. Taxis & buses are starting to look much better!

Got that right(high prices).
I have been looking for the last month to rent from Budget in BOS for next week. Prices substantially higher than the rate paid at Thanksgiving.
Compacts are even quoting above $200 or so. The trucks are coming in high also.
Lots of folks must be looking at colleges or something.
Guess the jig is up for the fire sales we had for awhile there.

I made reservations with AVIS and have found the rates somewhat lower for my dates. It helped that I used the costco discount code.

So, for my 2 island 13 day rental, so far I've saved about $125 over Budget.

It has taken some time & jiggling the reservations though.

With Budget, my total cost for the car was near $750 - right now, I'm hovering around $600.

I'll just keep on checking to see which company can give me the better deal.

Where do you find the discount codes, like for Costco?

Please see this thread in the AVIS forum.

FWIW,
Costco discount code on AVIS is A108325 or A108300. On Hertz is is CDP# 336436. I don't know about Budget because I have never rented from them. Sorry.
I recommend looking at all the car rental forums on this board(who you would consider renting from)and see what discount codes are listed and making a list for your personal use. I have saved a lot of money this way. Also be on the lookout for links to $ off coupons that can be printed out. They have been posted on both the Hertz and AVIS forums.

As one who rents frequently, I can tell you that rates are up in general. It's a combination of factors. Rental companies have reduced fleets to keep costs down, demand has increased somewhat, due to fewer people flying, more driving for short trips.
