£1200 surcharges now showing on BA and Virgin Atlantic redemption flights

“£1200 surcharges now showing on BA and Virgin Atlantic redemption flights” reported by Head for Points, rather annoying!

It looks like YQ has spiked to £900 on all business class return flights from LHR to JFK. BA, AA, VS, DL, even JetBlue

By comparison YQ on the CDG JFK route is £444

edited to add
UA/LH also impose a £900 YQ on LHR-SFO, more than twice the YQ on the direct FRA-SFO (£429)

Start in DUB or reduce the cash element and increase the Avios amount

So increase in surcharges is just for LHR-JFK, is this likely a (temporary) computer glitch? It only seems to apply when you upgrade with Avios on BA (apart from upgrading to First), but very annoying if it is what you actually want to do.

EDIT: some interesting comments/discussion in the original article in Head for Points...

So from reading the article it sounds like this only impacts UUA, full redemption prices (assuming you qualify for RFS) are unchanged.

Virgin FFs are getting royally screwed though.

it has risen on most if not all ex UK business class fares to North America . Ex EU fares appear to be unchanged, for now

Isn’t this a long-standing BA.com bug with UUA?

Z and U class should be £550 YQ not the revenue £900…

This doesn’t explain the YQ hikes by BA’s competition

Isn't the £850 the usual amount when not using RFS ? Below example LAX in November

I understand that use of 2-4-1 and Barclaycard upgrade vouchers are not impacted by the high YQ, what about use of GUF1 and GUF2?

Hasn’t YQ on US routes ex LHR in J been £900 for ages? Some pretty conflating reporting by HfP joining two similar sounding but fundamentally different things together in one article which is generating some of the comments over there IMO. Upshot no changes for full Avios redemption bookings. No changes to GUF Avios bookings- they price using RFS. GUF cash ticket CW to F unaffected as they have the same YQ. Bites on GUF a cash WTP to CW and UUAing WTP to CW on ex UK bookings.

yes, the fixed price associated with the old band rate should be close to the actual TFC for a comparable revenue ticket.

Straight question… why does BA add such huge ‘taxes & fees’ when NA carriers allow transatlantic redemptions for peanuts? What is so different about BA’s business model?

BA gives away Avios like jelly beans to UK and US holders of BA branded credit cards. If you have to fly for the Avios like the rest of us, they have become much harder to come by since the recent changes.

Market forces. It's a big business for BA, VS and other carriers, it's not some sort of charitable endeavour. If airlines were unable to sell the seats, prices would drop.
