BA Go-arounds thread
Go-arounds and not an unusual event and are sometimes reported here. Usually followed with pages of post recounting past experiences. So how about a thread dedicated to them? Here is BA983 [BER-LHR] yesterday which landed on second attempt. It was a bit breezy yesterday.

Last week day flight from JFK we had a second attempt. I thought it was the wind but apparently another aircraft hadn't cleared the runway. At LHR my experience is it typically adds 20 min to the flight time.

Say what?
Go-arounds happens countless times every day somewhere on this planet; BA and LHR are no exceptions. It's a perfectly normally procedure, thoroughly briefed by the crew during the descent. A go-around is therefore no more or less expected by the crew than a landing, and is therefore the epitome of a non-event. It is, as a matter of fact, anything but unusual.
Have personally lost count of the number of times I've been onboard when the aircraft has gone around for another try. It's a cool experience in my book, albeit it does add a few minutes to the travel time. But that's a fair trade.

Why? A Go- around is not an unusual flight manoeuvre - in fact you are more likely to be talked to by management for pressing on and attempting a landing from an unstable approach. It seems unusual that many people think it would be otherwise, I’m guessing it’s ignorance and a lazy press trying to create something sensational from a normal manoeuvre.

I’ve only had three lifetime out of several hundred flights and only one on BA - on my first ever BA, and 777 and transatlantic flight many years ago. We were informed after the fact that “another plane was heading down the runway towards us so we thought we’d have another go”. Pilot sounded remarkably cheery all things considered.

It is not unusual at LHR. I live under the 'go-around' flightpath and can normally hear a 'go-around' aircraft at 4,000 feet before having another try. Normally adds 20 minutes or sometimes less to the flight. It is not only weather-related issues causing go-arounds. The previous aircraft not clearing off the runway is a regular reason
