BA85 LHR-YVR, 22 Jan, returns to LHR

Hi all,

I was looking at today's BA95 from LHR to YVR as I'm on tonights BA84 from YVR and saw that it just circled back north of Edinburgh and looks to be heading back to LHR. Anyone have any ideas why?

BA app now has a 3 hour delay on the flight. Thank god the Cathay lounge is available from 8pm in YVR!

Thanks

Looks Like a tech fault. Currently circling over the lake district at 13000ft - burning fuel as I don't think the A350s can dump fuel??. I'm sure someone with more info will be on shortly!

Twitter suggests that it's a cargo door open warning. Hopefully a faulty sensor and nothing untoward.

The aircraft has a current operational defect or OPDEF that relates to a cargo door handle being very stiff and rendering that hold unusable, so those suggestions online may well be with some merit.

EDIT : it was indeed due to the forward cargo door showing an unsafe status that caused the diversion, the same door as in the aircraft tech log.

FWIW, the airborne time was 2h38 mins, and it flew (only) 3 short loops above the Lake District. Fuel burn doing this, as a proportion of the total carried, would be very small.

Currently showing a 22.00 departure but don't know if that's close to being accurate or not.

New flight plan just released so it won’t be far off 2200.

It's an option. Whether BA's A350s have that option or not I don't know.

If it costs extra I think we have our answer.

I don't disagree - I wonder why they went into a hold so far north? Maybe working through some checklists perhaps? And why stick at 13,000ft?

There is a small chance that it is fresh crew given LHR is home base and there was a fair amount of time to organise replacements. Not likely, but possible. One of the resident pilots will be able to answer at what point they time out.

If you were really bored and wanted to delve deeper into the rules, you could try reading CAP371. BA most likely have their own rules that supercede these, but it's a good starting point.
