BA Tier Points, Silver Status (Maintaining for 2 years)

Hi

Apologies, if this has been covered previously.

I read an article on HFP, on how, If you time it correctly & earn 600 tier points in a certain time, you effwctively get 2 years Silver Status (This is the aricle https://www.headforpoints.com/2023/0...tatus-upgrade/)

I'm completely baffled by how it's possible.

My status at present is Silver, Tier Point collection year ends 8th Sept 2023, Card Expiry 31st Oct 2023. - (I assume I'd drop to Bronze, if i don't hit 600 TP & relevant no of flights by 8th Sept?) Is that the case?

TIA

Miss the 600tp required by sept 8th 2023 and you will be silver till oct 31 2023 when you should drop to bronze

Earn 600 tp (and 4 qualifying flights) between sept 9 2023 and oct 31 2023 and you have silver for the rest of that qualufying year (oct 2024) and the whole of the next one (oct 2025)

I have read the HfP article and I have to say I am also confused! It refers to a an additional ‘run off’ year, which I think is incorrect! You only get the status in the year you earn it and then the following year. If you don’t maintain in during that second year then you drop down a tier.

It refers to ‘run off period’ not ‘year’.
  • 9th March 2025 until 30th April 2025 (your run-off period as Silver)
its just the period between your TPY ending and your Card/Status expiring.

if you want to avoid dropping to bronze yes. If you took the flight that got you to 600 tp on say November 3rd then for that flight you would be bronze. You would still then get silver for rest of that qualifying year and the whole of the next one

I go on a BA holiday 9th-19th September 2023, which with the double TP offer will earn me 560 TP, (just to be clear, to have Silver status until Oct 2025, i'd need 40 TP, by end of Oct 2023?)

No. You could earn the additional tier points anytime before 8SEP24. But as explained above, if you don’t want to suffer the indignity of a temporary loss of silver status then you would want to earn the additional 40 tier points before 1NOV23.

There is no deadline by which you have to earn the tier points: once you reach 600 TPs you will attain Silver for the remainder of the current collection year and the whole of the following year. But the sooner you earn them, the longer the period for which you'll be Silver.

My head hurts... Can't figure this out at all (What i mean is, I thought you only got status for a year at a time)

to avoid dropping to bronze you would need 40 tp by the end of october 2023.

You have the whole of the tier point colection (till sept 8 2024) year to get the additional 40 points you need to qualify for silver for rest of that year (oct 2024) and the whole of the next year (oct 2025)

I don’t know how much simpler we can make it.

Your current tier point collection year ends 8SEP23. If you don’t collect 600 tier points before 8SEP23 you will drop to bronze status on 1NOV23. Until 1NOV23 BAEC allows you to keep your silver status.

Your new tier point collection year starts on 9SEP23 and continues to 8SEP24. To achieve silver status during that collection year you need to earn 600 tier points. Whenever you earn the required tier points to attain or retain a status you earn it for the rest of that collection year and the next year.

To use this “trick” (which is not really a trick) if you have failed to requalify for status, is fly the necessary tier points (in your case 600) during your new collection year that starts 9SEP23. The “trick” is if you earn those 600 before 1NOV23 you will never have dropped to bronze. In actuality all you are doing is attaining silver in your new collection year.

sort of

When you qualify for a new level you get it for the rest of that collection year and the whole of the next year.

Depending when in the collection year that happens it could be just over one year or just under 2 years

Sorry just to double check my understanding, in my case I am currently silver with collection year end 08 July 2024 and card expiry 31 Aug 2024. I want to reach gold at some point. If I reach gold before 08 July 2024, after expiry 31 Aug 2024, I would roll back to Silver. So the best strategy for me is to not to reach Gold in this collection year but right after 08 July 2024 (or right after 31 Aug 2024? as jerry a. laska mentioned previously, if after Jul 2024 but before Aug 2024, I would never in reality down to Bronze?), then the gold would be valid till Jul 2025 (or Jul 2026?) Appreciate the help here. Thanks!
