FAQ : Buying Avios with Balance Booster, introduced Jun 2023

Apologies in advance if there's already a thread on this (tried searching but couldn't find anything).

I just noticed this "new" feature called "Balance Booster" on the page for buying Avios. The cost "seems" much lower than buying Avios out-right. Is this something new? Or have I just been living under a rock.

The price per Avios comes to $0.012 if you maximize it, and there's currently a promo offer for extra 10%.

I feel like I must be missing something, because this seems like a better offer than even the 50% bonus promotion that is offered once in a while.

Given that it says new in a big red box next to the balance boost tab, I'd say yes.

With the 10% bonus seems to be 0.84p per Avios in GBP.

These are the prices per avios (not accounting for the 10% bonus)

Rather backhanded to do this right after encouraging people to subscribe because Avios subscription prices (which worked out at 0.89p/Avios) were "going up".

Still, being able to buy more Avios at less than 1p each is good news.

The caveat is that you can only use this boosting feature to multiply avios earned in the last 30 days, and you only get the better pricing for the first 300k avios you use it for.

The 300k limit doesn't seem to be an annual one, just a per-transaction one. So for those who earn a lot of Avios - or perhaps have just received a SUB or made a big transfer from Amex - this could be very useful. If this remains in place, timing transfers from Amex will become an art.

0.836p per Avios, once you incorporate the 10% bonus being offered this and next month.

If other shopping.ba.com transactions are anything to go by (e.g. the subscription), then no - as these payments are with Avios Group Limited, not BA.

Long shot, could one combine purchased Avios with this deal to make purchasing Avios more attractive?

Example 1:
Purchase 100k @ £1,779

x3 booster 300k @ 0.0092 £2,760
10% booster bonus 30k

Total Avios 430k
Cost £4,539
£0.0106/Avios

Example 2:
Purchase 200k Avios for £3,539

x3 booster: 1st 300k @ 0.0092 £2,760
x3 booster: 2nd 300k @ 0.0177 £5,310
10% booster bonus 60k

Total Avios 860k
Cost £11,609
£0.0135/Avios

Yes, that would be an option. You're paying more than 1p an Avios there though, so probably only worthwhile doing if you're desperate to get enough points to make a redemption that will save you a lot over the cash fare.

Or if you're using a companion voucher.

What about if buying avios with the 50% bonus - that must work out fairly cheap?

'
  1. Not all transactions are eligible for boosting. Exclusions are balance transfers from other airlines, Nectar exchanges, Avios shared or gifted by other members and previously bought Avios.'

Previously bought avios cannot be boosted.
