English bubbles are actually very good. I'm a Certified Sommelier, so I at least know something about wine. I don't think it would be as much of a downgrade as you would think.

I drank the previous two English wines they offered. One was in the Galleries lounge, the other onboard. Both were worse than a Coop Prosecco, or a Mercadona Cava. Let's be honest, there's a reason why good champagne commands the price that it does.

I guess I would say you can find rubbish champagne as well - but it doesn’t mean all champagne is rubbish. Let’s see what it tastes like, and if it isn’t good we can criticise then?

I've tried many including the one served in F and two of the four listed in the article (the Simpsons and the Digby) and the Balfour blanc de blanc (admittedly not the one served here). I don't find any of them exciting myself (or surprising for that matter if I'm honest). Regardless of what you think of them, their style is very different from Champagne and indeed this is how it is intended so they won't replace it. There certainly is a form of Champagne snobbery whereby some people just see "Champagne" and think it must be good, but conversely, I personally think that there is very much a current market snobbery about English wines at the moment which I don't really share (and the good old 'I prefer a good sparkling to a bad Champagne') and which benefits English sparkling wines. There is more broadly a nationalistic "we do [whatever it is] just as well as [enter world leader in the field]" snobbery which affects virtually all countries and products. I have the same reservations about French whiskies, Spanish gins, Chinese 'Cognac' and so on. I don't find the Heidseck great either so personally, I'm sure some people will like it (good for them), but personally, I'll stick to the wines when there is a good one on offer, a Tanqueray and Tonic, or simply sparkling water.
