Question High Carrier Imposed Charges on Avios Redemption

Apologies if this topic has been discussed, cant seem to find anything on it.

Trying to book LFR-JFK with 2-1 redemption plus 1 child in Business

Is £844.26 per person normal? Haven't booked a flight with Avios in a long while. Cannot remember it being this high. These are Premium Economy cash booking prices. The Carrier imposed charge is £550? :/

Hi

Unfortunately yes it is that high

it does come as a bit if a sticker shock if you have nit been looking for a while
The carrier imposed surcharge has gone up significantly in the past couple of years with a significant increase recently

It had been discussed here in the past but makes avios redemption less beneficial if you can get a good cash fare

I looked at a J redemption to SIN recently for 2 of us and I think the taxes and fee's were approaching £2,000... Better off spending £3,000-4,000 flying on an airline with a better product and holding on to 350,000 Avios.

I'll probably just continue to use my Avios flying between BHD and LHR.

Hi,

Some carriers have lower charges and once you get to the US, charges to use Avios on AA/AS in the US are small so avios are better value ( also RFS within europe are good)

What I find interesting is that BA haven't aligned Reward flights and cash prices with the latest increases. A cash fare in CW has a YQ charge of £700 compared to the £550 shown in the OP.

They also see different things on their system than we do. Booked a reward flight on Iberia through BA.com ..taxes were 300 usd online and they quoted me 520 over phone for exact same flight

I very rarely use avios booking for TATL - this summer being an exception with a 241 in economy coming to a blistering $1200 in taxes and fees - only really useful if no lower fares are possible/available. Contrast that with a CE return to Vienna, or to Athens for a mere $4.

The carrier charge is even higher if you start in North America. For that reason I always get a chuckle out of those who claim that they stay with BA because the reward flights are so cheap.

For SH / Intra-Europe flights, they actually are.

The excuse for the two steep rises was due to the recent rise in oil prices.

Presumably they'll come down again when the price of oil returns to normal

Short-haul reward flights are extremely good value and were, before the pandemic, the way I which I redeemed most of my Avios.

Yes, looks like flying to Europe using Avios is the way to go.
