What the hecks going on with Taxes & Fees?

Hoping someone could help explain this to me:

I have an Avios booking using 2 Lloyds vouchers.
NCL-LHR Econ (no CE avail at time of booking)
LHR-JFK Club World
JFK-LHR Club World
LHR-NCL Club Europe

CE seats are now available on the first leg.
Extra taxes to change this 1 flight to CE are £560.94
The Avios agent said "they couldn't explain taxes but everything's going up these days isn't it"
Obviously I just left the booking as is.

I'm wondering if this is because all 4 flights would need to be dropped and rebooked afresh?

Tried to upgrade a BA holiday the other day with Avios which is MAD-LHR and LHR-BCN and they wanted approx 280 Euros additional fees on that. Utterely staggering and obviously declined. Not sure what is happening and whether our cases are connected in any way.

We upgraded a flight in Club to First using a GUF2 voucher last night, and there was an extra £130pp surcharge to pay. We were told by the BA agent that it's fuel related.

Guess with the price of oil skyrocketing that could be a genuine answer. Unfortunately I feel we will suffer the same fate as the last time oil prices went nuts. BA upped the fuel surcharges for the higher prices and then they never went down after oil prices dropped

We recently rebooked our trip to PUJ to the same dates the following years as the original FTV. An extra £120 was needed in taxes/fees. I’m guessing this has to do with the inflated fuel prices.
unfortunately, making any change to an existing booking results in the taxes/fees being recalculated. So even though the OP only asked for a change to the first leg, the entire trip will have been repriced.

Ex uk yq for a tatl now £700

hi

Just out of interest I priced a lhr to jfk Club or first flight to New York or washington at the end of april
yq alone is £700
total fees are now £992

From edi the fees are now £1000

Looks like a significant increase in the last few days as last time I checked fees were only c£730 iirc
regards
tbs

Ps dubai is still reasonable at only gbp 606 for taxes and fees
The surcharge does seem to have gone up very quickly and by some of the largest amounts in one go in memory

I wonder how long until RFS flights go up from 35 to 90-100 quid.

Glad I pulled the trigger on a 241 to SYD earlier this week now - it’s now at £1,035pp, a £200 increase

It was inevitable that the fuel cost would be passed onto the customer eventually. Few airlines will have any reserves to stomach this increase now. The reality for the timebeing is that flying is likely to become more expensive.

it's going to be cost over loyalty going forward.

I wonder what it means for the US since the difference ex-US is now smaller: NYC to EDI is $1799.17 in TFC and £1006.18 in the other decision.

yes, if you change one flight the taxes/fees/charges are recalculated for the whole booking at today's rates. if they are now more than when you originally booked, you will have to pay the difference.

Most airlines secure fuel rates, in advance, for at least 6-months out. It's very surprising to see such swift action. Sadly, I doubt the surcharges would even be lowered if oil was $5/gal.

If they do, they may only do so for 50% of their expected purchase, paying market for the remainder.

Not when the price of oil goes up! BA are consistently quick there!

They have gone down in the past, but nowhere near as quickly of course. We won't know if they'll be reduced until they are...
