BA canceled my flight and charged $55 to refund

Avios booking, BA canceled the flight and offered a rebooking on a different day. Declined and requested a refund. Fast forward six weeks and a couple of calls, the refund finally showed up with $55 deducted, presumably a cancellation fee. For a flight they canceled. Quite annoying. The Avios desk seems perplexed and unable to help.

Yes if this refund of the booking is the results of a cancelled flight you should get everything refunded and not have $55 deducted from the taxes/fees/charges.

Was the phone agent able to offer a solution rather than just being perplexed?

Did you inadvertently accept the rebooking and then decide to cancel in this case as the flight you are booked on the cancellation fee is payable?

The refund itself had been delayed multiple times, apparently bounced around internally within the refund department as they thought it was a voucher, before being escalated at least twice and then processed. It was a simple reservation with a canceled flight and a decline of the new booking. Since it was paid out the agent recommendation is take it to customer relations.

I do find that BA messes up administrative items more often than the other majors I use, and is the most painful to get a resolution out of.

No, definitely declined the new offer immediately and called.

I don't think we've had a case like this recently, but the Customer Relations aspect sounds correct: ticketing cannot just hand out money, and if the ticket is fully processed they wouldn't be able to take the matter further. Hopefully they made a note on your record at least. So I think this may have got mis-processed in the millions of other refunds made, and I would hope a brief note to CR will rectify this.

Hello, if the flight was cancelled by BA then you should not have been charged any canx fee. Rather than going via CR please message me your PNR and i will sort it for you.

Thanks CWS, it does seem to be documented correctly on the record, the agents definitely can see the history and notes. It’s kind of strange.

To round this out, BA Refund Helper came through and the cancellation fee was credited back to my card. Thanks!
