Ba 787 sounds

Hi.

I'm sure someone can answer. What is the higher pitched sound on the 787 just after engines reach take off power? It is almost like a high pitched whining noise and lasts until a few mins after takeoff. Not heard it on other planes.

Thanks in advance

Without hearing specifically what sound your referring I can only guess but i believe it’s a hydraulic pump that runs to facilitate the configuration changes needed. It sits just below the pax cabin I’m told.

Is it not just the engines themselves ? A few minutes after take off, the pilots will throttle back the engines a small amount, not stressing the engines so much once the aircraft is well and truly airborne.

They would normally go from Take off Thrust to a lower Climb Thrust as required by weight/noise abatement procedures.

It’s one of the electrically driven hydraulic pumps.

Previous posters (see here, for example) have also noted the whine on BAs 787s, which seems to be most prominent in the cabin area behind door 2.

If you're sensitive to this type of noise, it can really do your head in after a while.

Yes I notice it when in WTP. In front club cabin don't really notice it. It is really irritating after a few mins.. Can be very loud indeed.

It’s the guy or gal in front of you complaining about not getting a refill before reaching 10K
