This rings a bell for me. Pretty sure I had this but when trying to click through and secure it, an error would occur.
Weird loophole though. You’d think unfortunately after a couple more of these reports surfacing BA will shut this down as it’s clearly some sort of IT glitch

Something is really buggy. I have a WTP upgraded to CW using Avios reservation too. First time I clicked on upgrade to F it presented me with a price difference (alas, not negative amount) but when I clicked on it subsequently it said (correctly) that the reservation can not be upgraded online.
Wonder what happened in OP’S case? I hope you were able to complete the upgrade procedures and received your refund!

Or even a small fee for the upgrade. This makes no sense; it has to be a glitch.
So yeah, "a summer intern", or hacker who wants to punish BA?

If you're offered the upgrade online but the website can't handle it, you can (as I recall) phone up to get it done. You just have to be offered it online to get it, you can't ask on the phone for an upgrade that you have not been offered online.
So if it's a negative upgrade amount and the website carks it while trying to process the transaction, phone up and see what you get.
