Just to counter and balance I did 12 hours to Kula Lumper in a 787 in the last row in the twin seats and it was ok.

The flight was packed but I could spread out into the space between the window.

If that seat wasn't free on a 787 I wouldn't fly it.

It could be worse an airline in France is flying it 10 across!!!

I did LHR-YYZ in a Y exit row and it was fine. Mitigating factors were:
  • YYZ isn't very far
  • It was a day flight
  • I was next to my partner, so personal space was less of a concern that when flying solo
  • I'm 196cm tall, but not very "wide"
I've also done a domestic flight on a Hainan B787 which is 3-3-3 in Y, but that was only for 3.5 hours, so probably less comparable.

Gone are the days of this type of BA adverts which pitch passenger space and comfort! I can’t imagine anyone now saying, “it’s so roomy that British Airways 787”.

At all cost? It would probably be a lot better if you were to pay the cost for an extra seat in Y!

But if you were to do that, then the money might be better spent on a different way of getting comfortable, like WT+.

TBH - just flew KUL-LHR in Y on the 789, and although its always nice to be in a bigger seat, Y was really OK for me (6F tall). Actually managed about six hours sleep. I can basically sleep anywhere but was this was fine for me !

Did KUL once in the extra legroom Y and its abysmal. Narrow , hard and not something I will do again. If you do do it choose an aisle that will give your eating hand/arm room to move, ie take the C seat if right handed..

What are revenue fares on BA and other airlines like, including non-OW? ET may be a decent option, or EK. The latter flies ex DUR.

If revenue fares are significantly low then it might be preferable to using Avios. Not useful if you need a one way though

If you're asking 'at all costs' and the answer is 'yes', you should just pay to upgrade to J!

That’s the obvious solution, but no availability in any class until after I have to be back. It’s peak season and England are playing test matches in SA so prices are sky high.

If you can get exit seats, does that mean you are Gold? If so, what about forcing a GPR for 2 x Avios on the 380? It always feels an expensive way to go, but compared with double Avios for an indirect route it'd be a good deal!

I find 9 across on the 787 to be pretty bad, but not nearly as bad as 10 across on the 777.

AFAIK exit row seats on long haul are open to all. They certainly are on the flight I’m looking at.

You may be thinking of the A350 - that is being flown to the French Caribbean in 3-4-3.
