Baggage allowance on mixed-class itineraries

I called the gold line last week to book a ticket that I couldn't put together online; outbound LHR-EWR in WT+ (T) and back JFK-LHR in WT (N). The call centre agent in Newcastle asked if I wanted HBO or not on the return leg, for £20 less. As I wasn't planning to check a bag, I gladly accepted.

I did raise the point that if BA allows me to fly the outbound in WT+ with checked baggage (and as BAEC gold, extra allowance), they should - surely - permit me to return with it. The agent was adamant that I wouldn't be able to fly the return legs with checked luggage without paying extra.

I'm pretty sure that this has been discussed before, but have the rules changed?

The agent is correct. It was the case that most generous baggage allowance for mixed itineraries applied across both flights, but that changed in 2017. Most Generous Allowance no longer applies.

BA removes baggage Most Generous Allowance (MGA) for new bookings from 18 Oct 2017

Okay, that explains why I was confused. Thanks KARFA.
