I don't understand why anyone would go through Dubai or Doha on the way from London to Montreal. Which is where the original poster was flying.

True. However, when I’ve flown east from London i’ve preferred the change in Europe (nearer origin) or in Asia (nearer destination). Not really thought about *why* up until now, but it’s probably less distruptive (in my mind at least).

With QR and EK, youre pretty much guaranteed and middle of night connection at least one way, if the middle of the night being, not actually necessarily being the middle of the night there but where you're coming from or trying to get to. Its just the nature of what it is.
As above though, there could indeed be pros to this on the jet lag side of things in certain cases.

However it is a personal preference and that would not have helped the OP who gave a perfectly sensible review including why a non stop was best for them.
