I don't understand why anyone would go through Dubai or Doha on the way from London to Montreal. Which is where the original poster was flying.

True. However, when I’ve flown east from London i’ve preferred the change in Europe (nearer origin) or in Asia (nearer destination). Not really thought about *why* up until now, but it’s probably less distruptive (in my mind at least).

Well this really isn't true. Going East I normally take the 09.30 EK from Gatwick. Arrives in Dubai at 20.00 and offers plenty of connections not in the middle of the night.

However it is a personal preference and that would not have helped the OP who gave a perfectly sensible review including why a non stop was best for them.
