Whilst I am pretty confident it will remain a non-issue, I too have organised an Irish passport. The credit card sized Passport card is great for my regular buzzing around Europe, including crossing the DE-AT border nearly every day.
In the OPs case, I would say it depends on which EU passport you have. If it is Irish, just use that for everything, as it has automatic access to both the EU/EEA and the CTA (Common Travel Area).
