Devices off - ‘special’ landing

Never been told before that all devices need to be off for a special landing into fog. Happened this morning coming into Oslo.

Have to say the CE cabin staff were excellent. Really warm and accommodating.

This happens when it is a fully automated landing. It was discussed previously (maybe on the 'Ask the Staffer' thread).

Yes has happened to me a couple of times.

Just the over over cautious approach so to speak, but prefer the pilots like that.

Happened to me not long ago coming back from Ams. Didn't realise till after we landed that the dodgy old phone while mine was being repaired was using had switched itself back on.

I think this thread has the best background information from the resident experts:

Low visibility landing

I've actually had this more often on easyJet than BA, even though I do far more flights on BA than easyJet (if that wasn't obvious!). I guess their procedures are slightly different, plus perhaps some of the routes involved are more prone to auto-land.

AC and some other airlines have insisted in the past that all electrical devices should be off for takeoff and landing.

Some airlines still do. Jet2 for example.

Fog seems to be an issue at Bristol airport on a lot of the days of the year, I’ve had Easyjet tell us to turn out devices off when landing into there before.

Very common worldwide on carriers using aircraft equipped with advanced avionics.
