Only if an ex-AMS trip is feasible for you. It isn't feasible for many people, and it isn't suitable for many more for whom it might be theoretically feasible.

ex-EU is not the answer to every question, and it is certainly not "daft" to choose not to do one.
Ldnn1 and SoggyDollar like this.

I wouldn't go quite that far but the I agree the charges associated with Reward flights have reached a point whereby it is always wise to check the alternatives of part pay with Avios or even outright purchase.

Which depends on the reason for accumulating Avios, for some (me) its a bi product of leisure travel and targeted spending in which case it is normally a good way of travelling in premium cabins at a much reduced cost every year or two. The cost to undertake a reasonably 'safe' Ex-EU often mitigates the the purpose, especially when travelling from the regions and factoring in positioning flights and a night stop prior to beginning an ex-EU.
I'm looking at booking flights to SIN around the time of the F1 grand prix next year and the ex-EU gains at the moment appear to be marginal given the increased hassle and marginal savings so I'm about to pull the trigger on a MAN-HEL-SIN-HKG-HEL-MAN itinerary with which I'm struggling to find a justifiable ex-EU. (looking at Finnair to SIN incorporating a CX to HKG on the return at the moment for under £2,100.00 Per person)

Let's hope that Qatar come up with a 2-4-1 sale instead!

Question, i was quoted over twitter 25000 to upgrade Mex to Lhr from WTP to CW plus 17.40 gbp in fees. They then wrote back and said actually it was 299 USD plus 25000. Any ideas why this is happening? It seems really not a good deal all of a sudden.

Oddly enough I saw a dramatic decrease in the number of available NY/LON seats once the announcement was made (all the way down to 0 for the dates I was looking for).

I ran a manual check online and appears taxes both ways for a CW ticket around 910 usd I paid 750 usd or so on my original. Any ideas why I am getting such a high quote of 299 for only 1 way?

BA's YQ surcharge has recently increased, I think.

But it can only be a guess unless we know a bit more about what you originally paid (including the breakdown), what you paid it for, and when.

"What you paid it for" would have been helpful if it had been more explicit about the route and the cabins.

Today's rates for MEX-LHR-MEX in WT+ and CW, expressed in USD, from ITA using the cheapest fares in February (ie switching off the availability checker):-

Code:
WT+
Mexico Transportation Tax IVA International (XO) $39.10
Mexico Airport Departure Tax Tua International (XD) $54.99
Carrier-imposed surcharge (YQ) $378.00
United Kingdom Air Passenger Duty APD (GB) $201.70
United Kingdom Passenger Service Charge Departures (UB) $60.30

CW
Mexico Transportation Tax IVA International (XO) $134.00
Mexico Airport Departure Tax Tua International (XD) $54.99
Carrier-imposed surcharge (YQ) $428.00
United Kingdom Air Passenger Duty APD (GB) $201.70
United Kingdom Passenger Service Charge Departures (UB) $60.30
.
.
.
Playing with mixed cabins suggests that the first line (the XO) may be a value-added tax dependent on the base fare.
