It is really rubbish. I live a few minutes walk away and have been once! Certainly not worth a trip!

You might want to consider the 'three for the price of one' possibility of Strasbourg and Colmar in France along with Basel, Switzerland. Easy to go from one to the other by train for a day. You would fly to Basel-Mulhouse.
All 3 made the top 10 list last year. https://www.europeanbestdestinations...stmas-markets/

Just back from Colmar and Mulhouse for the weekend.
Mulhouse was good, Colmar really exceeded my expectations, which was picture postcard perfect in so many ways. We were lucky with the weather which was sunny and clear.
Thanks to the contributions on here to suggest Alsace and the Haut-Rhin for Christmas Markets. It did not disappoint.

You lucked out with the weather in that part of the Alsace today. It's also a relatively good time to visit the Colmar market as it's not very busy at the moment. Conversely, the Mulhouse one was probably too quiet. I was lazy this weekend and just went to the Basel one.

Berlin. I doubt that any of its Christmas markets would make it into a "Top 10 German markets" list, but the sheer number of them across the city, along with the excellent shopping and other attractions make it a good destination for a weekend winter getaway.
Unless you also want that old-town feel, of course, in which case Berlin's mixture of brutal socialist and post-war architecture might not be your cup of tea.

I spend a few days at Christmas market destinations every year, so I've been to many by now, both in what is now Germany proper and in the German-influenced periphery.
I agree with those who recommended Strasbourg (and Colmar), Dresden, and Cologne. Last year I did Innsbruck, in the Austrian Tyrol, and Bolzano/Bozen, in the Italian (but predominantly German-speaking) part of Tyrol. I found the combination very satisfying, and had a great time in both cities.
I'm in the preliminary stages of planning this year's trip. I'm thinking Hamburg, Bremen, and Lübeck.

Thinking about booking a Christmas market trip - what’s everyone’s favourite and or hints & tips? I had in my mind Zagreb as somewhere or possibly Heidelberg or maybe Rostock (I have a vague FT memory of someone saying that was their favourite German market)...BA flights obviously to somewhere close. Done the obvious ones such as Vienna, Berlin, cologne

Heading there on Wed 5 - Fri 7th if anyone else is around :-)

Last winter went to the one in Frankfurt, Koln, Nuremberg, Rothenburg and Munich.
I like the one in Koln most and Rothenburg is the most disappointing.
This year will be in Vienna, Budapest, Salzburg, Innsbruck and Munich.
Many people suggest me to visit Strasbourg though.

Just done Budapest this weekend. Flights go from T3 so there are multiple choices for breakfast! The #100E bus goes direct between the airport and the city centre but was packed both ways. Alternatively there is a bus to the main train station and metro from there which would all be free with a Budapest Card (which also gets free admission to a number of museums and sights and more).
Market-wise it was OK, plenty of interesting food and drink choices and all fairly compact in the centre so all walkable. The illuminated public buildings at night are very picturesque. Overall, not as enjoyable as Vienna which remains top of our list so far.

Incredibly cheap deal at the Hilton Danube which is just a few hops on the U-bahn into the centre, great schnitzel at Figlmüller and the Sacher Torte/Strudel are to die for.
Oh and the T3 CX Lounge to start a brilliant trip off. I am completely dim-summed.
