Help Getting to Tampa today LGW-TPA BA2167 Cancelled

Would appreciate some help – a friend arrived at LGW at 06.30 for their trip to TPA – BA2167 in J.

Flight has been cancelled and they were told this is due to potential hurricane disruption. This sounds peculiar as other Florida flights are flying as usual. They’ll be half hour from Heathrow shortly and I’ve advised rejecting the current offer of flying tomorrow and get there today with a stopover. Couple of questions; can someone check and see the reason shown for the 2167 cancellation?

More pressing, can anyone check availability on new routes today from midday onwards from LHR? It is strange the desk at Gatwick did not offer Orlando etc. The traveller has never had any experience with situations like this, and of course went along with what they were told.

Flights to TPA:

If they can get a move on, there's one seat on AA 731 from LHR at 11:00 to CLT connecting to AA 1811.

Later there are seats on AA39 from LHR at 12:50 to MIA connecting to AA1921.

After that there's not a lot with a seat in business all the way.

There seems to be plenty of availability to the US but limited availability to TPA specifically so the weather issue seems realistic.

There is availability LHR-MIA (which goes from T3) in J, but only in Y on MIA-TPA. However, that takes off at 10.40 a.m. - possible but tight.

Later on they can get to MCO via PHL (T5) or MIA this afternoon, but not TPA (at least not as things currently stand).

(Edit: via MIA is now Y1 only so no good for both).

The website of the National Hurricane Centre is currently showing zero tropical cyclone activity during the next 48 hours.

It's marked as cancelled for operational reasons @ my bolding which I believe includes weather related issues but on the face of it there doesn't seem to be any hurricane activity but there is local thundery showers and breezy.

Good luck with any re-routing.

While there are seats on AA39, AA1921 seems to be fully booked.

Could they get put on one of the Orlando flights from LGW instead? It's only an hour drive from Orlando to Tampa.

I hope they specifically mentioned that Regulation EC261/2004 "re-routing, under comparable transport conditions, to their final destination at the earliest opportunity" Showing knowledge of regulation and law can motivate correct action in service agent staff.

AA39/AA1921 in business class is that earliest opportunity.

Unfortunately it now seems to be sold out; it did have seats earlier when I looked.

This does seem to be the problem; she's been on phone for over 30 mins getting nowhere. I wish I had been awake half hour earlier !!!!

So what is BA’s excuse for the cancellation?

BA2167 normally has a TPA ETA of 1410hrs. According to FR24, between 1200hrs and 1600hrs today there are 39 other scheduled TPA flight arrivals - how many of these are currently showing as cancelled? Zero!

Has the operating air carrier fulfilled their obligation as detailed in Art 8?
